1st Annual Bike-to-Work Competition at A+A

Background
Back in 2007, Anshen+Allen’s San Francisco office implemented bike racks on the roof terrace so that cyclists riding to work could store their cycles safely and conveniently. Prompted by high participation in the Bay Area’s annual Bike to Work Month (20+ individuals particpated in the month-long challenge), the new bike racks furthered A+A’s growing commitment to greening the office. Prior to the rack installation, very few people were riding to work due mostly to the fact that there were no safe and accessible bike racks in the area. Since then, the office has had a continual stream of daily pedal pushers.

In 2009, Anshen+Allen’s Columbus office boasted 10 riders out of 15 total employees during the annual Columbus Bike to Work Week. The cyclists logged over 500 miles during 107 one-way commutes to and from work throughout the challenge. Employees teamed up to brave the bike trails, city streets and unpredictable weather.

The Challenge
While the citywide bike-to-work competitions in SF and Columbus take place during the month of May, a few competitive cyclists decided to bring biking to the annual Ecomonth event calendar with an intra-office challenge. During the week of 6/21-6/25, the two offices will battle in a Bike to Work Week challenge of our own design for a trophy & bragging rights. Daily incentives such as Bagels for Bikers and Bike to Lunch Day will inspire daily riders and rookies alike to fill up those bike racks.
